SIP is a text-based request/response protocol. A call begins with an INVITE, progresses through provisional responses such as 100 Trying and 180 Ringing, is answered with 200 OK, and ends with BYE or an error response.
SIP carries only the signaling; the media itself flows separately over RTP, with the endpoints negotiated through SDP inside the SIP messages.
